Yellow

At Tomatofest I set my taste buds on a mission to discover the best of this class; it was a challenge to limit my choices for adding this year. My only hope is that these varieties produce as well for us in Texas as they taste. I hope you will join me in trialing these.

I am temporarily suspending this variety do to piss-poor germination... I may re-list if they (ever)sprout... Lets keep our fingers crossed! Another interesting offering for 2010 from the folks at “Wild Boar Farms” out in Cali; Showing a striking pattern of yellow-green stripes on a purplish red skin with a marbled flesh. Size varies from medium to large. A stabilized cross between Cherokee Purple and Green Zebra. With that parentage it almost has to be good! Be one of the first to add this variety to your Texas garden. ‘Wild Boar’ says “ Warning, high acid content may cause flashbacks. This tomato blows me and alot of my customers away. A favorite to many of my chefs. Mid-late to late, 75-90 days. indet. regular leaf plants. 8-16 oz. Fair to good production. Green fruit with yellow and red stripes. Interior is a true tri-color. Creamy green flesh infused with various shades of red and yellow. Each of these colors has a different flavor resulting in a spicey, sweet, tart tomato with good acid all in one fruit.” Sorry, not available this year.

Indeterminate 80 days, — From our friends at Victory Seeds " Small, mostly one ounce globe-shaped yellow and red bicolor fruits. Size is not consistent ranging from one to two inches in diameter. Excellent flavor - sweet and juicy. Tastes like 'Big Rainbow' but in a small fruit. We received this variety from heirloom tomato collector Craig LeHoullier who received it from Reinhard Kraft of Germany" Should be nice!!! From Baker Creek "Flavorful, very juicy, 1oz fruit are a beautiful yellow-and pink-blushed bicolor! So yummy tasting, being incredibly sweet and fruity. Vines are quite productive. This is a great variety for home and market growers who love beauty and taste" Sorry, but I've dropped this one for 2010, May I suugest the new 'Gajo de Melon' or the ever popular Isis Candy instead. Sorry, not available this year.

Aka: ‘Porkchop’ Another escapee from the ‘Wild Boar Farms” of California, via our friends at Baker Creek. Another Zebra cross, this time with yellow skin covered with darker yellow stripes. It is also larger than Green Zebra. Good fresh, lemony and tangy taste. Pale yellow, silky flesh. Round, lobed, large size. Hard to find. Rare! “New” to the market. ‘Wild Boar’ says “PORKCHOP: Most "yellow" tomatoes are actually orange. This is a true yellow, starts off yellow with green stripes which ripen to gold. Mid season, 75-85 days. Indet. regular leaf. medium size slightly flattened beefsteaks. Great sweet tomato flavor with hints of citrus. Best yellow I have ever had."

80 Ind. Just behind ‘Texas Star’ in sales for 2009, this is one of the best large-fruited Yellows heirlooms on the market. Considered one of the best tasting yellows, lusciously sweet with a full tomato bite. Like most beefsteaks with meaty interiors, shape is smooth and typically blemish free. The vigorous vines produce well, but it is the combination of 10oz. fruit size and unmatched full flavor that make this a winner. Gourmet/Personal Choice. Check out Texas Star, Persimmon, or Big Yellow Zebra

Very similar to 'Yellow Pear'; strong vigorous vines become absolutely covered with sweet yellow tomatoes. The fruit is a bit more plum-shaped than that of Yellow Pear, but what really makes Fargo distinctive is that it is a much smaller plant than Yellow Pear, a plus for gardeners who don't want to stake such tall plants. Determinate. 72 days. Sorry, not available this year.

This is a perfect example of why I do this; to offer you folks cool tomato varieties like this one. From the deep diversity at Baker Creek; “Small, bright yellow fruit are borne in trusses, and yields are good; they have a nice flavor and are an ancient variety that is described in various historic botanical books. Grown at Hortus Botanicus, Padua, Italy, 1553. A very pretty, historic “Love Apple” that is among the oldest.” Small 1-2” fruits on small, to 6’ plants.

85 days. Ind. Our best selling large-fruited Yellow variety in 2009. A new introduction from our friends at Tomatofest ©: "From the grand state of Texas. Our Tomatofest organic tomato seeds produce tall (naturally), indeterminate (naturally), regular-leaf tomato plants that yield lots of BIG, 1-2 lb., yellow tomatoes with red striping inside and out (and generally a reddish star on bottom end). Very sweet, with well-balanced acid content, making extremely flavorful tomatoes with few seeds. A good choice for a salad tomato, tomato sauce, slicing thick for sandwiches or eating fresh off the vine. I like to make a Texas Star tomato sauce for a Texas sized pasta. Here's one tomato that's 'Proud to be Texan’. Compare with Dr. Wyches’ Yellow, Big Yellow Zebra, or Persimmon.

1266 Yellow Reisentraube

It has been a while since I’ve offered the red ‘Riesentraube’; just so many other good red cherries already on the list. But now in 2010 we have a yellow sport of the fantastically rich flavored original. Yellow Riesentraube – Uber Rare, which is hard to believe, for two reasons. First off, the growing popularity in the Red Riesentraube, (and other grape tomatoes.) and secondly the sheer amount of fruit this plant produces. The lineage of the seed is from William Woys Weaver. I do not know lots about the provenance of this variety, but the reds history keeps unfolding, from is reintroduction in 1993 to its early use in An 1857 Pa German Cookbook. 75 days. Ind. Sorry, but at this time seeds have been back-orderd... I am removing temptation, but will re-list when the seeds appear- I hope!!! Sorry, not available this year.
