OrangeAt Tomatofest I set my taste buds on a mission to discover the best of this class; it was a challenge to limit my choices for adding this year. My only hope is that these varieties produce as well for us in Texas as they taste. I hope you will join me in trialing these.

Determinate, (85-90 days) Reliable producer of beautiful 3-4" round fruits with shiny orange skin and orange flesh, very meaty. Produces fruits in clusters. Shoulders are always smooth and almost never crack. Well-balanced flavor. Plants require staking, but are typically less than 36" tall and always are very manageable.. Surprissingly popular in 2009, thanks folks!
| 1175 | Orange Banana![]() |

| 1250 | Orange Fleshed Purple Smudge![]() Try Google |
I actually grew/offered seedlings of this variety last year; even planted a dozen in my gardens. But alas they were taken by the drought. None the less I believe this variety has the capability of becoming one of my absolute favorites. I think everyone should try this one…Or those of you lucky enough to order before I sell out. From Baker Creek;” The most unique tomato I have seen in many years, this stunning tomato is a vibrant, tangerine-orange with shocking true purple splashed in various amounts over its upper half. I loved photographing these beauties, as they always stand out and look so artistic and ornate with their flattened shape, ribbing and brilliant color! This is one of the few domestic tomatoes that have true purple pigment, although research is being done with wild purple tomatoes. These have a nice sweet, mild and fruit-like taste that make them good for snacking or cooking. Fruit weighing 4-10 ounces were produced in abundance and tended to get more purple as the season progressed. Our most talked about tomato from our 2008 gardens. Limited seed supply. 80-90 days.”
| 1120 | Peche Jaune![]() |
67 Ind. This is one fruit that will never leave your garden. Small 1" round, pale-yellow, fuzzy, peach-like fruits offer a soft "elegant" mildly fruity-sweet flavor. Yet another fine example of why I grow so many of these smaller fruits. | Sorry, not available this year. |
| 1051 | Persimmon![]() |
80 Ind. One of the best tasting orange fruits? If it's better than Kellogg's Breakfast I want some! Vigorous and prolific plants offer up 5" fruit, up to 2 lbs., sweet and meaty with few seeds. A tried and true winner for Texas.
| 1203 | Roman Candle![]() Try Google |
It's rare to find a pure-yellow, banana-shaped tomato, and even more difficult to find one with superior flavor. Roman Candle satisfies on both counts. Paste-type fruits, 4 to 6" long, are very meaty and flavorful with brilliant yellow skin and white flesh. An excellent choice for salsas and sauces. Very similar to "Sweet Orange Roma" by description, I'm offering this variety for those willing to help me with some side X side testing. Bright orange 'roma' type fruits great for snackin' or pastin'. 80 days Indeterminate | Sorry, not available this year. |
| 1211 | Russian Persimmon S-D![]() Try Google |
Another 'something different' for my container-growing friends; I've found you this very attractive yellowish-orange tomato. The flavor is outstanding, with significantly more acid than in most yellow tomatoes. Short plants are less than 4 ft. tall, but bear an abundance of these striking tomatoes. – From Amishland Heirloom Seeds: "This was my favorite new bi-color (striped ) tomato that I have ever grown, and believe me, I have grown lots as I adore the striations and marbling. This gorgeous tomato hails from the famous seed bank of the former Soviet Union. This is the first heart shaped (oxheart) tomato ever discovered with stripes. It is bi-colored both outside and inside. An absolutely breathtaking beauty. The taste is fruity, sweet and wonderful. I had very large fruits, mine averaged one pound, although it was described as being 8 oz or more. Very solid meat, scant gel and very few seeds. I am so very pleased to offer this beauty...this was the tomato more people commented on in my gardens than any other this season." Determinate. 81 days
| 1212 | Rutgers VFA![]() Try Google |
Gardeners everywhere are rediscovering this old-fashioned classic for its terrific flavor and productivity. This strain has some disease resistance, which may help produce large crops of crack-free, bright red 6 to 8 oz. tomatoes with delicious old-time taste. For many years, this was a favorite for canning because of its abundance, juiciness and deep red color through and through. Developed in the 1920's, Determinate. 75 days. | Sorry, not available this year. |
| 1025 | Sun Gold (Hybrid)![]() Try Google |
(Hybrid) 57 Ind. Since its introduction in 2004 from the Tokita Seed Company of Japan I have been a fan of this tomato. Burpee’s says ”Rapidly becoming the most popular cherry tomato of all time an amazing feat for a non-red variety.”And you my friends are no exception, making ‘Sungold’ my best selling ‘mater in ’09. I can't recommend this variety more highly. These ľ" cherries ripen to an absolutely beautiful bright orange. The flavor is not just sweet, but rich and complex. The good folks at Pinetree Garden Seeds compare the flavor to a fine dessert wine. Couple with Black Cherry and/or Sugar Lump. (Hybrid)
| 1117 | Sweet Orange Roma![]() |
76 Ind. A very interesting variety indeed; you folks seem to agree and made S.O.R my 8th best seller in 2009. This is the one that made the biggest impact on my taste buds at Tomatofest. I simply could not believe the combination of color and flavor. A typical 1˝" × 3" Roma shape fruit, but bright orange, filled with a good balance of acidity and sweetness. A++. Compare to Amish Gold and Orange Banana.
| 1225 | Texas Star![]() Try Google |
85 days. Ind. Our best selling large-fruited Yellow variety in 2009. A new introduction from our friends at Tomatofest ©: "From the grand state of Texas. Our Tomatofest organic tomato seeds produce tall (naturally), indeterminate (naturally), regular-leaf tomato plants that yield lots of BIG, 1-2 lb., yellow tomatoes with red striping inside and out (and generally a reddish star on bottom end). Very sweet, with well-balanced acid content, making extremely flavorful tomatoes with few seeds. A good choice for a salad tomato, tomato sauce, slicing thick for sandwiches or eating fresh off the vine. I like to make a Texas Star tomato sauce for a Texas sized pasta. Here's one tomato that's 'Proud to be Texan’. Compare with Dr. Wyches’ Yellow, Big Yellow Zebra, or Persimmon. |
