Cherry

My overall favorite category, cherry tomatoes awaken the child in all of us. These plants are the true definition of an edible ornamental, a garden favorite to add beauty and provide a tasty respite on a leisurely stroll. I offer many cherries because I believe there are few things prettier than a really big bowl full of these assorted colored and flavored garden gem-stones. The varieties I am offering will fill the hearts of any serious chef, and will challenge the space limitations of the most harried tomato-fancier. I dare thee to grow one of each!!!

Indeterminate 80 days, — From our friends at Victory Seeds " Small, mostly one ounce globe-shaped yellow and red bicolor fruits. Size is not consistent ranging from one to two inches in diameter. Excellent flavor - sweet and juicy. Tastes like 'Big Rainbow' but in a small fruit. We received this variety from heirloom tomato collector Craig LeHoullier who received it from Reinhard Kraft of Germany" Should be nice!!! From Baker Creek "Flavorful, very juicy, 1oz fruit are a beautiful yellow-and pink-blushed bicolor! So yummy tasting, being incredibly sweet and fruity. Vines are quite productive. This is a great variety for home and market growers who love beauty and taste" Sorry, but I've dropped this one for 2010, May I suugest the new 'Gajo de Melon' or the ever popular Isis Candy instead. Sorry, not available this year.

65 Ind. 65 Ind. Beaten out, but only slightly, by ‘Chocolate Cherry’, the 15th best seller for 2009. The first truly 'Black' cherry was introduced at tomatogrowers.com in 2003. Little ½" to ¾" dark fruit are packed with the sweet, rich, complex flavors Not only does this make a fantastic addition to the color spectrum for commercial growers and gourmet kitchen gardeners but I consider the rich, deep flavor to at least hold its own with Sungold. Compare to Brown Berry, Chocolate Cherry, or Zebra Cherry Hy.

Ind. (70 Days) Rounding out the top ten for 2009, New in '08... Something different; lets’ compare to the tried and true "Black Cherry" and "Brown Berry". From the folks at Totally Tomatoes: "Extremely flavorful, uniform, round fruits in trusses of 8, measure 1" in diameter. Fruits hold stems very well, don't crack and can be picked several days before completely mature and allowed to ripen off the vine without sacrificing quality. Great variety for the home gardener or for packing into pints for market." It goes to prove, you staple the word “Chocolate” to something and you get peoples attention!

And now for something completely different; Just for the goof of it- the folks at Baker Creek are really publicizing this little oddity. A novel variety,, this tomato is like a big bunch of cherry tomatoes all fused together: an amazing trait that had everyone here asking questions about the alien-looking, bumpy tomatoes. Also called “Traveler tomato” (“reise” is German for “travel” or “journey”) for the ability to tear it apart a piece at a time, like a garlic clove - with no need for a knife. This type of tomato traces its roots to Central America where the native people would carry traveler tomatoes on trips, to eat as they walked. Bright red tomatoes taste--well, rather sour, strong and acid. The perfect tomato for those who love raw lemons, but who cares? They are still far-out and groovy. Not an astounding flavor, but definitely a curiosity that will bring wonder and fun to the garden.

(Hybrid) 57 Ind. Since its introduction in 2004 from the Tokita Seed Company of Japan I have been a fan of this tomato. Burpee’s says ”Rapidly becoming the most popular cherry tomato of all time an amazing feat for a non-red variety.”And you my friends are no exception, making ‘Sungold’ my best selling ‘mater in ’09. I can't recommend this variety more highly. These ¾" cherries ripen to an absolutely beautiful bright orange. The flavor is not just sweet, but rich and complex. The good folks at Pinetree Garden Seeds compare the flavor to a fine dessert wine. Couple with Black Cherry and/or Sugar Lump. (Hybrid)

Perfect for drying, canning and paste. Also delicious fresh and great for specialty market. From Seeds Savers "(Solanum Burbankii) Bred in the early 1900s by Luther Burbank, who called it Sunberry and lamented it being renamed Wonderberry by the dealer who purchased and introduced it. Critics immediately claimed Burbank had simply reintroduced S. nigrum, Garden Huckleberry, as a new plant. Burbank said it was the result of many years of crossing of Solanum guinense (a species native to Africa) and S. villosum (indigenous to Europe). Sunberry's fruits are blue, slightly sweet and slightly larger than a pea. Said by its admirers to rival and even surpass Blueberries. Truly historic variety. Every now and then my hybrid-hatin’ heart gives way to the marketing/retailer where I keep my pocketbook… this just looks too pretty to pass up. New from ‘Totally Tomatoes’ “Melt-in-your-mouth fruits could be mistaken for large strawberries in appearance and taste - extremely sweet once mature, when skins turn a deep red, with thick flesh and a small inner cavity. High yielding plants. Holds well on the vine and resists cracking.Petite, tapered fruits have a beautiful, deep red color with broad shoulders tapering to a blunt point at the blossom end, giving them a heart-like appearance. Fruit on later sets will have more of a point at the tip end. Firm, chewy texture with excellent sweet flavor with more juice than some cherry tomatoes.. Fruits avg. 1" x 1" and weigh approximately 10-15 gm. Indeterminate. Sorry, they cost a little more as seeds are very expensive. (Hybrid)

It has been a while since I’ve offered the red ‘Riesentraube’; just so many other good red cherries already on the list. But now in 2010 we have a yellow sport of the fantastically rich flavored original. Yellow Riesentraube – Uber Rare, which is hard to believe, for two reasons. First off, the growing popularity in the Red Riesentraube, (and other grape tomatoes.) and secondly the sheer amount of fruit this plant produces. The lineage of the seed is from William Woys Weaver. I do not know lots about the provenance of this variety, but the reds history keeps unfolding, from is reintroduction in 1993 to its early use in An 1857 Pa German Cookbook. 75 days. Ind. Ok, yes another Hybrid in 2010, why you ask??? Well, A) it is a cherry, B) it is technically a bi-color and C) it is a Black fruit - My personal tri-fecta !!! This compact, hard-to-find basket type produces loads of tangy fruits that are slightly larger than the average cherry at 1 to 1-1/2 inches in diameter. Exotic fruits have red and green stripes, with dark red flesh that is surprisingly flavorful and very firm, making them easy to cut. Hardy plants are ideal for small spaces and patios. Det 70days.
