I would prefer not to impose my judgment or 'recommendation' on any variety as even I have had poor luck one year only have it rewarded nicely the next. Needless to say, any and all varieties that I offer have considerable individual merit. Over the last couple of years I've had the pleasure of chatting with many of you, trialing a few new varieties, and venturing out to the Carmel Tomatofest® to expand and revise my list of faves. Too many of you ask... so here is my list, the bestest of the best for 2006.

From Tomato growers Supply: "While the name of this tomato peaks of its lovely ribbed and scalloped appearance, it is the wonderful, old-fashioned tomato flavor that really sets it apart. Heavy crops of 12 to 16-oz. beefsteaks mature fairly early on vigorous plants that stay at a manageable size, unlike some other varieties in this class. Add to this outstanding productivity, great flavor, and ability to keep well after harvest and you have one beautiful tomato!" - Sounds great to me...lets give her a try this year shall we. Size varies from medium to large. A stabilized cross between Cherokee Purple and Green Zebra. With that parentage it almost has to be good! Be one of the first to add this variety to your Texas garden. ‘Wild Boar’ says “ Warning, high acid content may cause flashbacks. This tomato blows me and alot of my customers away. A favorite to many of my chefs. Mid-late to late, 75-90 days. indet. regular leaf plants. 8-16 oz. Fair to good production. Green fruit with yellow and red stripes. Interior is a true tri-color. Aka: ‘Porkchop’ Another escapee from the ‘Wild Boar Farms” of California, via our friends at Baker Creek. Another Zebra cross, this time with yellow skin covered with darker yellow stripes. It is also larger than Green Zebra. Good fresh, lemony and tangy taste. Pale yellow, silky flesh. Round, lobed, large size. Hard to find. Rare! “New” to the market. ‘Wild Boar’ says “PORKCHOP: Most "yellow" tomatoes are actually orange. This is a true yellow, starts off yellow with green stripes which ripen to gold. Mid season, 75-85 days. Indet. regular leaf. medium size slightly flattened beefsteaks. Great sweet tomato flavor with hints of citrus. Best yellow I have ever had."

70 Ind. Tying in popularity with Homestead in 2009:Famous throughout Europe, and now in America, known for exceptional flavor. The perfect blend of acid and sugar in a medium sized, crack resistant, bright red fruit. Widely adapted and easy to grow, these plants produce good yields and should prove a favorite in your garden. I purchase my seeds from the good folks at Tomatofest ©; this is what they have to say, “The French Carmello is among the most productive tomatoes ever bred. It is popular in European markets because of it's exceptionally fine flavor. I de-hybridized this variety over a 5 year period around 1993. Bears large crops of heavy, juicy tomatoes with flavor that just doesn't stop. Another favorite because it consistently produces great tasting fruit, even in cooler weather. Good for slicing in salads, sautéed, or as an integral part of any dish.” Compare with Dona, Momotaro.

New for 2010; I am always looking for ‘new’ green tomatoes. Baker creek has released this beauty;” A far-out and really cool tomato developed by Tom Wagner, who also bred the ‘Green Zebra’ and many other great varieties. This one is especially fascinating, with its amazing, pointed pepper shape and the mellow green skin, nearly like a green chili. The flavor is also good, strong and earthy, perfect for canning or for making green ketchup! This is one of the few green paste tomatoes and, like most paste types, this one has few seeds. I actually grew/offered seedlings of this variety last year; even planted a dozen in my gardens. But alas they were taken by the drought. None the less I believe this variety has the capability of becoming one of my absolute favorites. I think everyone should try this one…Or those of you lucky enough to order before I sell out. From Baker Creek;” The most unique tomato I have seen in many years, this stunning tomato is a vibrant, tangerine-orange with shocking true purple splashed in various amounts over its upper half. I loved photographing these beauties, as they always stand out and look so artistic and ornate with their flattened shape, ribbing and brilliant color! This is one of the few domestic tomatoes that have true purple pigment, although research is being done with wild purple tomatoes. These have a nice sweet, mild and fruit-like taste that make them good for snacking or cooking. Fruit weighing 4-10 ounces were produced in abundance and tended to get more purple as the season progressed. Our most talked about tomato from our 2008 gardens. Limited seed supply. 80-90 days.”

And now for something completely different; Just for the goof of it- the folks at Baker Creek are really publicizing this little oddity. A novel variety,, this tomato is like a big bunch of cherry tomatoes all fused together: an amazing trait that had everyone here asking questions about the alien-looking, bumpy tomatoes. Also called “Traveler tomato” (“reise” is German for “travel” or “journey”) for the ability to tear it apart a piece at a time, like a garlic clove - with no need for a knife. This type of tomato traces its roots to Central America where the native people would carry traveler tomatoes on trips, to eat as they walked. Bright red tomatoes taste--well, rather sour, strong and acid. The perfect tomato for those who love raw lemons, but who cares? They are still far-out and groovy. Not an astounding flavor, but definitely a curiosity that will bring wonder and fun to the garden.

(Hybrid) 57 Ind. Since its introduction in 2004 from the Tokita Seed Company of Japan I have been a fan of this tomato. Burpee’s says ”Rapidly becoming the most popular cherry tomato of all time an amazing feat for a non-red variety.”And you my friends are no exception, making ‘Sungold’ my best selling ‘mater in ’09. I can't recommend this variety more highly. These ¾" cherries ripen to an absolutely beautiful bright orange. The flavor is not just sweet, but rich and complex. The good folks at Pinetree Garden Seeds compare the flavor to a fine dessert wine. Couple with Black Cherry and/or Sugar Lump. (Hybrid)

76 Ind. A very interesting variety indeed; you folks seem to agree and made S.O.R my 8th best seller in 2009. This is the one that made the biggest impact on my taste buds at Tomatofest. I simply could not believe the combination of color and flavor. A typical 1½" × 3" Roma shape fruit, but bright orange, filled with a good balance of acidity and sweetness. A++. Compare to Amish Gold and Orange Banana.

85 days. Ind. Our best selling large-fruited Yellow variety in 2009. A new introduction from our friends at Tomatofest ©: "From the grand state of Texas. Our Tomatofest organic tomato seeds produce tall (naturally), indeterminate (naturally), regular-leaf tomato plants that yield lots of BIG, 1-2 lb., yellow tomatoes with red striping inside and out (and generally a reddish star on bottom end). Very sweet, with well-balanced acid content, making extremely flavorful tomatoes with few seeds. A good choice for a salad tomato, tomato sauce, slicing thick for sandwiches or eating fresh off the vine. I like to make a Texas Star tomato sauce for a Texas sized pasta. Here's one tomato that's 'Proud to be Texan’. Compare with Dr. Wyches’ Yellow, Big Yellow Zebra, or Persimmon.

77 Ind. A very beautiful little 'mater. As pretty as tasty; the small fruits are lightly lobed and flattened with thin pale yellow, pink blushed skin covering sweet-tropical flesh with just a hint of citrus. This is why I grow tomatoes!

A little something different for me; for you? Just wanted to see these fuzzy little babies on my benches this spring…plus they are supposed to taste good! An Angora-type, with fuzzy, silvery-gray, dusty miller-type foliage and an excellent producer of 1" cherry tomatoes. Flavor is sweet and intense, packed into small, red, round fruits that make an attractive display against downy plants. Skins have a very faint fuzz, but not to the same degree as peach tomatoes. A choice variety.

They have pretty violet-purple fruit with iridescent green streaks! Fruit weigh 1-3 ounces, are smooth and have good tasting, dark purplish-red flesh. This variety will also amaze you with its yield: it’s not only high, but incredibly high, being one of the most productive tomatoes we have grown. A great variety for marketing. An Italian paste-type tomato that is a beautiful, deep red elongated oval with very solid flesh and a higher natural sugar content. This sugar coupled with ample acid make these tomatoes tastier for fresh eating, as well as for canning, freezing, and turning into sauce or salsa. Resistant to bacterial speck, and sets fruit better in hot weather than the original Roma. A modern hybrid that has become a classic Italian-type tomato. Determinate. 75 days (Hybrid)

Aka Tromboncino (‘Little Trumpet’),Zuc. Tromba d’ Albenga YEAH!!!! We found seeds!!!! back to available!!! The first and only true squash to make it to the web-world. This is a stunner; Deep green leaves with silver flecks as big as a dinner plate on huge 20’+ vines. One of the most stunnig plants in the garden last year. The first to sell out at my markets and the seeds source sold out quick last year as well. The famous Italian heirloom vining zucchini and pumpkin, long, slender 15" fruit have a flat bulb at the bottom, hence the ‘trombone’ name. They are one of the best eating summer squash, very tender, mild and sweet tasting. The flavor is superb! This squash is also great as winter squash. The Italians use it for stuffing in gnocchi and ravioli; the flesh is rich and flavorful, great for baking and pies! The vines produce good yields of this great all-purpose squash. The mature fruit grow very long. When picked young, under 12” use as zucchini. As they mature bake like a winter squash. This one is in very high demand at specialty markets. Developed in Albenga, Liguria, Italy… It was listed by Fearing Burr in his “Field and Garden Vegetables of America” (1863) This was the most remarkable plant in my garden last year (before the heat and drought consumed everything BUT the squirrels) I could not help but offer this outstanding plant. HUGE vines with equally impressive dinner-plate sized dark green leaves, boldly marked with silver. As beautiful a plant as a tasty veggie!!!
