Hybrid

To quote an old Letterman bit, "I do, and do, and do for you kids and this is the thanks I get". The banner reads 'Heirloom Tomatoes of Texas' not 'Every Tomato Known to Man', but I'll get off my well worn soap box for a minute...There comes a time when I will occasionally listen to my customers - not often, 'cause you know how much even good folks can yak, yak, yak - and I will consider growing even the occasional (gulp) hybrid. Enough of your kind words have cracked my hybrid-hatin-heart that I offer the following handful. To be completely truthful I do grow and highly recommend 'Sungold', so if I am already compromising myself to offer this one mutant strain, why not a few more?

Limited numbers were grown for 2010... and they went pretty quick. I'll grow more next year! Consider Dona, Momotaro or Carmello instead. From Tomato Growers Supply: "An outstanding new French tomato that has become very popular among French gardeners because of its fine, full tomato flavor and excellent performance." Juicy, round tomatoes weigh an average 5 ozs. Outstanding yields outdoors as well as under plastic. Lets compare this variety to 'Dona', which is getting hard to find. Semi-indeterminate. 72 days. (Hybrid) 57 Ind. Since its introduction in 2004 from the Tokita Seed Company of Japan I have been a fan of this tomato. Burpee’s says ”Rapidly becoming the most popular cherry tomato of all time an amazing feat for a non-red variety.”And you my friends are no exception, making ‘Sungold’ my best selling ‘mater in ’09. I can't recommend this variety more highly. These ¾" cherries ripen to an absolutely beautiful bright orange. The flavor is not just sweet, but rich and complex. The good folks at Pinetree Garden Seeds compare the flavor to a fine dessert wine. Couple with Black Cherry and/or Sugar Lump. (Hybrid)

Every now and then my hybrid-hatin’ heart gives way to the marketing/retailer where I keep my pocketbook… this just looks too pretty to pass up. New from ‘Totally Tomatoes’ “Melt-in-your-mouth fruits could be mistaken for large strawberries in appearance and taste - extremely sweet once mature, when skins turn a deep red, with thick flesh and a small inner cavity. High yielding plants. Holds well on the vine and resists cracking.Petite, tapered fruits have a beautiful, deep red color with broad shoulders tapering to a blunt point at the blossom end, giving them a heart-like appearance. Fruit on later sets will have more of a point at the tip end. Firm, chewy texture with excellent sweet flavor with more juice than some cherry tomatoes.. Fruits avg. 1" x 1" and weigh approximately 10-15 gm. Indeterminate. Sorry, they cost a little more as seeds are very expensive. (Hybrid)

An Italian paste-type tomato that is a beautiful, deep red elongated oval with very solid flesh and a higher natural sugar content. This sugar coupled with ample acid make these tomatoes tastier for fresh eating, as well as for canning, freezing, and turning into sauce or salsa. Resistant to bacterial speck, and sets fruit better in hot weather than the original Roma. A modern hybrid that has become a classic Italian-type tomato. Determinate. 75 days (Hybrid)
