Black Fruit

As a category 'black fruit' tomatoes are considered to be very rich and full of interesting flavors. Another bonus is the general ability to produce even in warm weather regions. This is the single hottest category, more folks asked about 'black fruit' last spring than any other group. Attached are my choice offerings for this next season. As with many of the other categories there are a lot more black tomato varieties on the market and I hope to add many more over the up-coming years, it's up to you to let me know which.

I am temporarily suspending this variety do to piss-poor germination... I may re-list if they (ever)sprout... Lets keep our fingers crossed! Another interesting offering for 2010 from the folks at “Wild Boar Farms” out in Cali; Showing a striking pattern of yellow-green stripes on a purplish red skin with a marbled flesh. Size varies from medium to large. A stabilized cross between Cherokee Purple and Green Zebra. With that parentage it almost has to be good! Be one of the first to add this variety to your Texas garden. ‘Wild Boar’ says “ Warning, high acid content may cause flashbacks. This tomato blows me and alot of my customers away. A favorite to many of my chefs. Mid-late to late, 75-90 days. indet. regular leaf plants. 8-16 oz. Fair to good production. Green fruit with yellow and red stripes. Interior is a true tri-color. Creamy green flesh infused with various shades of red and yellow. Each of these colors has a different flavor resulting in a spicey, sweet, tart tomato with good acid all in one fruit.” Sorry, not available this year.

65 Ind. 65 Ind. Beaten out, but only slightly, by ‘Chocolate Cherry’, the 15th best seller for 2009. The first truly 'Black' cherry was introduced at tomatogrowers.com in 2003. Little ½" to ¾" dark fruit are packed with the sweet, rich, complex flavors Not only does this make a fantastic addition to the color spectrum for commercial growers and gourmet kitchen gardeners but I consider the rich, deep flavor to at least hold its own with Sungold. Compare to Brown Berry, Chocolate Cherry, or Zebra Cherry Hy.

Our most exciting new tomato for 2008, it is wonderful in every way. This unusual variety was developed by Pascal Moreau, a horticulturist from Belgium. The multi-colored, smooth fruit (green, yellow and purple mix) weigh about 1 1/2 lbs. The flesh is bright green with deep red streaks. Everyone loves their superb flavor that is outstanding, being both sweet and smokey with a hint of citrus. The yield is one of the heaviest we have ever seen! Be the first at your farmers market to have this new classic.

Of Cherokee decent, this variety was introduced prior to 1890 in Tennessee. These large plants can offer up to 12oz. rosy-pink-purple, o.k., black fruit with deep brick red, richly flavored flesh. Excellent complex flavor, slight sweet aftertaste, perfect slicer for tomato sandwiches. I have been growing this special variety in my gardens since day one. Ind. (70 Days) Rounding out the top ten for 2009, New in '08... Something different; lets’ compare to the tried and true "Black Cherry" and "Brown Berry". From the folks at Totally Tomatoes: "Extremely flavorful, uniform, round fruits in trusses of 8, measure 1" in diameter. Fruits hold stems very well, don't crack and can be picked several days before completely mature and allowed to ripen off the vine without sacrificing quality. Great variety for the home gardener or for packing into pints for market." It goes to prove, you staple the word “Chocolate” to something and you get peoples attention!

It is productive, a compact indeterminate plant, fruits are oblate, a bit smaller than Cherokee Purple, shoulders not as dark, but color similarly dusky rose with some occasional green striping. Flavor is best when fully ripe. Should be more popular. Sorry, not available for 2010, please compare with Black Krim, Black Pineapple, and Black Zebra. Sorry, not available this year.

Ok, yes another Hybrid in 2010, why you ask??? Well, A) it is a cherry, B) it is technically a bi-color and C) it is a Black fruit - My personal tri-fecta !!! This compact, hard-to-find basket type produces loads of tangy fruits that are slightly larger than the average cherry at 1 to 1-1/2 inches in diameter. Exotic fruits have red and green stripes, with dark red flesh that is surprisingly flavorful and very firm, making them easy to cut. Hardy plants are ideal for small spaces and patios. Det 70days. These are going to go fast!
